MEM25010B Perform fitout procedures
A note on sources
The unit codes and unit titles referenced in this post (e.g., the MEM/MSA codes) come from the Australian TAFE boatbuilding curriculum I studied over two years. Beyond borrowing that name and code, however, the actual written content was substantially researched, reorganised, and rewritten with the help of AI to reflect current boatbuilding practice — it is not a reproduction of any textbook, and in many places it differs significantly from the original course material.
If you are currently studying this unit, please treat this post as a personal study aid and general reference only — not as an accurate substitute for your actual coursework, assessment material, or your instructor's guidance. Always check your own institution's materials for anything that matters for assessment.

What this unit covers /
MEM25010B deals with the practical skills used to fit out a vessel once the hull, deck, and major structure are complete — building and installing interior joinery, mounting deck hardware with proper load-spreading and sealing, selecting and applying the right bedding compound for each fitting, and planning wiring and plumbing routes with future access and maintenance in mind. Fitout is where a completed structural shell becomes a genuinely usable, seaworthy vessel, and a great deal of a boat's long-term reliability and ease of ownership is decided at this stage rather than during the earlier structural work.
Interior Joinery /
1. Marine joinery vs household joinery /
Interior joinery on a vessel differs from household cabinetry because it has to keep working while the whole structure is moving — shelves, counters, and lockers need a raised lip or "fiddle rail" around their edges to stop loose items sliding or flying off in a seaway, something a static house shelf never needs. Latches and catches on doors and drawers need to be positive (a real mechanical latch) rather than relying on friction, magnets, or gravity alone, since those can all fail to hold under the vessel's motion at exactly the moment something needs to stay shut.
2. Weight-conscious construction /
Interior furniture is generally built using lightweight cored panels (foam- or honeycomb-cored, faced with thin timber veneer or laminate) rather than solid timber or particleboard, since every kilogram added above the waterline in furniture affects the vessel's stability and performance more than the same weight would low in the hull. This mirrors the same lightweight-core principle covered in the composites and structural units, applied here to non-structural interior fitout rather than the hull itself.
3. Ventilation behind panels /
Enclosed lockers and cabinets against the hull skin trap condensation if air cannot circulate behind them, since the hull surface can run cooler than the cabin air, causing moisture to condense on the hidden inner face of a sealed-in panel — a common, often-overlooked cause of mould and musty smells in an otherwise well-built interior. Fitout design typically includes small ventilation gaps, louvred panels, or gaps left deliberately at the base of joinery to let air move behind furniture rather than sealing every cavity airtight.
4. Fastening joinery to the structure /
Interior furniture is generally bonded to the hull or bulkhead with epoxy fillet-and-tape joints (the same technique covered in the timber components unit) at cleats or tabbing points, rather than through-bolted at multiple points, wherever the furniture itself does not need to be removable. This avoids unnecessary hull penetrations — every through-hull fastening is a potential future leak path — while a properly bonded tab joint also spreads the furniture's load over a wider area of the hull skin than a handful of point fasteners would.
Deck Hardware /
5. Load-bearing hardware needs backing /
Deck hardware that carries significant load in use — cleats, winches, stanchion bases, padeyes — must not rely on the deck skin alone to hold the fastener, particularly on a cored deck, since the fastener can pull straight through a thin skin or crush the core locally under load. A backing plate (a rigid plate of aluminium, stainless steel, or reinforced FRP fitted on the underside of the deck, matching or exceeding the footprint of the hardware above) spreads that load over a much larger area of deck structure, converting a concentrated point load into a distributed one the deck can actually carry.
6. Sealing fastener penetrations in a cored deck /
Every hole drilled through a cored deck for a through-bolted fitting is a potential path for water to wick sideways into the core, exactly the failure mode covered in the repair unit's discussion of wet core. Standard modern practice is to drill the fastener hole oversized, remove a small amount of core around the hole (a countersink or "pot"), fill that pot with thickened epoxy, and then drill the correctly sized fastener hole back through the cured epoxy plug — so the fastener and any water that reaches it are surrounded by solid, waterproof epoxy rather than exposed, absorbent core.

7. Fastener and backing material selection /
As with any marine fastening, the hardware's fastener material, backing plate material, and the deck's own fittings need to be checked for galvanic compatibility rather than chosen independently — a stainless steel bolt against an aluminium backing plate, for example, needs proper isolation (washers, sleeves, or an appropriate barrier) in a wet environment to avoid accelerated corrosion of the less noble metal. This is the same galvanic principle covered in the timber components unit, applied here to deck hardware assemblies.
Sealing & Bedding /
8. Choosing a bedding compound /
| Polyurethane | Very high adhesive and structural bond strength, low flexibility once cured. Good for permanent structural bonding (e.g. some hull-to-deck joints), but a fitting bedded in polyurethane is genuinely difficult to remove later without damage — not the right choice for hardware expected to be serviced or removed. |
| Polysulfide | Strong adhesion with more flexibility than polyurethane, and remains removable/serviceable with reasonable effort. The traditional standard for structural deck hardware and teak deck seams, since it also bonds well to teak and other timbers without the "nothing sticks to it later" problem of silicone. |
| Silicone | Very flexible and easy to remove, but comparatively weak as an adhesive and, critically, leaves a residue that prevents paint, varnish, or most other sealants from bonding to that surface afterwards. Best reserved for non-structural fittings that are frequently removed (some portlights, non-structural trim) and never used where later overcoating or a different sealant might be needed nearby. |
A simple rule of thumb taught on many modern courses: "if it needs to come off again, don't use polyurethane; if paint or varnish might ever go near it, don't use silicone." Always confirm the specific product's compatibility and cure requirements on its technical data sheet, since formulations vary between manufacturers.
9. Application technique /
A fitting is bedded with a continuous, unbroken bead of sealant covering the entire mating surface — not a few dabs or a bead around the outer edge only — so there are no gaps where water can bridge past the seal once the fastener is tightened. Fasteners are tightened evenly and progressively (working across the fitting rather than fully tightening one corner at a time) to compress the sealant uniformly, and the squeeze-out that appears around the edge once fasteners are snug is left in place until the sealant has cured, then trimmed away — squeezed-out sealant is evidence the joint achieved full, even contact, not simply excess to be wiped off immediately.
Systems, Access & Safety /
10. Planning wiring and plumbing routes /
Wiring and plumbing runs are planned before final joinery closes off access to a space, since retrofitting a cable or hose through an already-finished interior is far more difficult and often damages otherwise-completed work. Runs are generally kept accessible along their length where practical (behind removable panels, in labelled conduit, or along an accessible chase) rather than permanently sealed inside a structural cavity, since a future repair or upgrade should not require cutting into finished structure to reach a wire or hose.
11. Access panels and future serviceability /
Pumps, valves, filters, and any component that will need periodic inspection, adjustment, or replacement are fitted with a properly sized and positioned access panel, sized for a hand (or, where relevant, tools) to actually reach and work on the component — not just sized to see it. A common and avoidable mistake in fitout is building a technically watertight, well-finished interior that leaves a critical system component effectively unreachable for anything beyond a visual check, forcing destructive access later.
12. Labelling and documentation /
Wiring runs, through-hull fittings, and shut-off valves are labelled clearly at the time of fitout, and, where practical, recorded on a simple as-built diagram — an accurate record made while the work is fresh in the fitter's mind is far more reliable than trying to reconstruct the same information years later, and is genuinely useful to whoever owns or maintains the vessel after the builder has moved on.
13. Safe working practices /
- Wear appropriate respiratory protection when sanding cored decking or drilling through a deck for hardware installation, since core dust and old coating dust are respiratory irritants and their exact composition is not always known.
- Wear gloves and appropriate skin/respiratory protection when applying polyurethane sealants specifically, since isocyanate-based curing agents in many polyurethane products are a recognised respiratory sensitiser with repeated exposure.
- Confirm safe access, adequate lighting, and ventilation before working inside confined lockers, bilges, or under-berth spaces, which can present restricted movement and poor air quality.
- Use correctly sized hole saws with a backing block when drilling through cored panels, to avoid breakout or splintering on the underside that would otherwise require additional repair.
- Isolate electrical systems appropriately before working near wiring during fitout, and confirm correct polarity and fusing before energising any newly fitted circuit.
- Follow correct manual handling practices when fitting heavy hardware, tanks, or large joinery components in confined interior spaces.
