MEM17003A Assist in the provision of on the job training

What this unit is about

MEM17003A is about teaching — specifically, teaching trade skills to others in a workplace setting. It does not require you to be a qualified trainer. It covers the role of an experienced worker who assists in passing on practical knowledge: how to plan a demonstration, how to deliver it clearly, how to check that the learner has actually understood, and how to give feedback that builds rather than discourages. In a boatyard, this is the unit that formalises what senior builders already do when they work alongside apprentices and new starters.
What this unit does NOT require
MEM17003A is not a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). You are not expected to design full training programs, write competency assessments, or formally assess learners against national standards. Your role is to assist: to demonstrate skills, explain procedures, support a learner's practice, and report progress to the supervisor or trainer responsible. Keep the scope clear — overstepping into formal assessment without authority creates compliance issues for the yard's RTO.

Why on-the-job training matters in boatbuilding

Boatbuilding involves a large body of practical knowledge that cannot be fully conveyed in a classroom or a textbook. Laminating technique, gel coat application, reading resin cure behaviour in changing temperatures, fairing by feel — these are skills that can only be learned by doing, under the guidance of someone who has already developed them. The quality of on-the-job training directly determines the quality of the product. A learner who is shown how to do something correctly once, supervised during practice, given specific feedback, and then re-checked produces work of a consistent standard. A learner who is told "just watch what I do" and then left alone makes errors that end up in the hull.

The four-step on-the-job training method

The most widely used structured approach to on-the-job training in manufacturing environments is the four-step method: Prepare, Present, Try out, Follow up. It was developed as part of the Training Within Industry (TWI) programme in the 1940s and remains the standard because it works — each step addresses a common failure point in informal training.

Planning a training demonstration

Effective on-the-job training is prepared, not improvised. A brief written plan — even just a few bullet points — prevents critical steps from being left out and ensures the learner gets a consistent experience regardless of how busy the day is. The plan does not need to be elaborate; it needs to be complete.

Understanding how people learn

People learn in different ways. A training approach that works well for one learner may be less effective for another. The most widely used framework in vocational training recognises four primary modes, often summarised by the VARK acronym. In practice, most people use a mix of modes, and most trade skills require a mix to be acquired properly. Recognising which approach is landing and which is not allows you to adapt mid-session rather than repeating the same technique louder.

Giving feedback during on-the-job training

Feedback during training has a different purpose than feedback on a finished product. During training, the goal is to shape behaviour — to reinforce what the learner is doing correctly and correct what they are not, while keeping them motivated to continue. Feedback that is too harsh or vague causes the learner to lose confidence or to stop trying to improve. Feedback that is only positive and does not address errors allows the wrong technique to become ingrained.

The sandwich model — and when not to use it

The feedback sandwich (positive → correction → positive) is a common training technique. It works well when a learner has made genuine progress mixed with specific errors, and when the relationship is new, and trust is still being built. It does not work when the positive framing is insincere or when the correction is so critical that burying it between compliments causes the learner to miss its importance. In a safety-critical environment — where a technique error could result in a structural failure or a chemical exposure — be direct and clear about the correction. Safety corrections are never sandwiched.

Checking understanding — going beyond "do you understand?"

"Do you understand?" is one of the least effective questions in training. Almost everyone will say yes — either because they think they understand (but don't), because they don't want to appear slow, or because they are too comfortable with the trainer to admit confusion. Effective understanding checks are active: they require the learner to demonstrate or explain, not just affirm.
Boatbuilding example
Explain-back
"Before you mix the next batch, tell me what would happen if you added 4% MEKP instead of 2%."
Show me
"Show me on this panel what a dry-spray area looks like, and what caused it."
What next?
"The first coat has been applied. Without looking at your notes, what do you do next, and why do you wait before doing it?"
Error identification
Apply gel coat at too close a range to produce a run. Ask: "What is wrong with this area, and what would you do to fix it before it cures?"

Recognising and responding to learning barriers

Not every learner will progress at the same rate or in the same way. Some barriers to learning are obvious; others require closer attention to notice. As someone assisting with on-the-job training, you are not expected to diagnose or resolve every learning difficulty — but you are expected to recognise when a learner is struggling and report it to the responsible trainer or supervisor so that appropriate support can be arranged.
Practical response
Language or literacy difficulty
Use diagrams and more demonstrations; reduce reliance on written instructions; report to supervisor — LLN support may be available through the RTO
Confidence deficit
Start with a lower-stakes task to build success; acknowledge incremental progress specifically; make clear that errors on test pieces are expected and useful
Overconfidence
Refer to the specification as the standard, not your personal preference — "the WI requires this"; use measurement to demonstrate the gap between their result and the requirement
Fatigue or stress
Reschedule training to a better time where possible; avoid introducing new steps when the learner is fatigued; mention your observation to the supervisor

Documenting and reporting training progress

As a person assisting with training, you have a reporting obligation. The responsible trainer, supervisor, or RTO needs to know what has been covered, how the learner performed, and what still needs attention. This reporting forms part of the learner's training record and may be used as evidence in their competency assessment. Verbal reporting is not sufficient — keep brief written notes of what was demonstrated, what was practised, and what the outcome was.

On-the-job training in the modern boatyard

The principles in MEM17003A are timeless, but the context of applying them in a boatyard has shifted in ways worth noting. The growing complexity of modern build methods — vacuum infusion, structural adhesive bonding, advanced composite materials, integrated systems wiring — means that the knowledge gap between an experienced tradesperson and a new starter is wider than it was in a simpler era of hand laminating and basic joinery. This makes structured on-the-job training more important, not less. At the same time, digital tools have added new dimensions. Short instructional videos recorded on a phone or tablet can supplement live demonstrations — a learner who missed a step during a demonstration can review it. Digital training records linked to a learner's portfolio remove the risk of paper records being lost. And for yards working with apprentices through an RTO, digital log books (such as those used in Australian apprenticeship systems) require exactly the kind of structured, dated, signed records that this unit teaches you to produce. The experienced builder who can pass on knowledge clearly and document it properly is not just being a good colleague — they are performing a function that directly supports the yard's compliance, reputation, and long-term skill base.
