MEM16007A Work with others in a manufacturing, engineering or related environment
What this unit is about
MEM16007A covers the human side of production work. Building a boat is a team activity — even in a small yard, a single builder depends on colleagues, supervisors, suppliers, and clients at every stage. This unit looks at how teams function, what roles individuals play within them, how to contribute effectively, how to handle disagreement professionally, and how to work constructively with people from different backgrounds. These are not soft extras — a team that communicates poorly or handles conflict badly produces inferior boats and unsafe workplaces.
Roles and responsibilities within a boatyard team
Every person in a production team has a defined role. Understanding your own role — and respecting the roles of others — is the foundation of effective teamwork. Confusion about roles is one of the most common causes of duplicated effort, missed tasks, and workplace conflict. In a boatyard, the following roles are typical, though titles vary between yards.

Understanding your own role clearly
A person who understands their role knows three things: what they are responsible for, what decisions they can make independently, and when they must refer to someone else. Overstepping your role — making decisions outside your authority — creates as many problems as failing to act within it. An apprentice who modifies a laminate schedule without authorisation has overstepped their role, even if they believed their change was an improvement.
How teams develop — Tuckman's stages
Teams do not perform at their best from day one. In the 1960s, psychologist Bruce Tuckman identified that teams move through predictable stages before reaching high performance. Recognising which stage your team is in helps you respond appropriately — rather than being surprised or frustrated when a new team struggles initially, or when an established team is disrupted by a new member.

Contributing effectively to a team
Being a productive team member is not the same as simply doing your own tasks well. Effective contribution involves awareness of the wider team's needs, willingness to help when your own workload permits, and a commitment to not creating problems that others have to fix. In a boatyard context, this translates directly into production outcomes.

Conflict in the workplace — understanding and resolving it
Conflict is a normal feature of any workplace where people work closely together under production pressure. The goal is not to eliminate conflict — it is to prevent it from escalating into something that damages the team, the work, or individuals. Unresolved conflict costs a boatyard in lost productivity, poor communication, safety risks (people stop warning each other), and staff turnover.
Common causes of workplace conflict in a boatyard

A step-by-step approach to resolving conflict

Working with diversity in the boatyard
Australian boatyards are often multicultural workplaces. Workers may come from different countries, speak different first languages, and bring different cultural approaches to authority, communication, and teamwork. This is an asset — diverse teams bring broader problem-solving capability, but it requires awareness and deliberate effort to ensure everyone can contribute safely and effectively.
| Area of difference | 인식해야 할 사항 | Practical approach |
| Language proficiency
Speak at a measured pace; use diagrams alongside written instructions; confirm understanding with read-back; do not assume confusion means incompetence
|
| Attitudes to authority
Explicitly invite input: "I want to hear if you see anything that doesn't look right." Create a team culture where raising concerns is rewarded, not penalised
|
| Communication style
Base your judgment on intent, not style. Address misunderstandings early and privately before they are interpreted as disrespect
|
| Religious and cultural observance
Plan around known requirements where operationally possible; consult the individual respectfully rather than making assumptions
|
| Age and experience
Treat experience and new knowledge as complementary. Frame new methods as additions to what already works, not replacements for it
|
Giving and receiving feedback
Feedback is the mechanism by which individual and team performance improves. In a production environment, feedback flows in both directions — from supervisors to workers, from workers to supervisors, and between peers. Both giving and receiving feedback well are skills that take deliberate practice.

Receiving feedback well

Working with others in the modern boatyard
The principles in this unit are unchanged by technology, but the context of applying them has evolved. Several developments in modern boatbuilding make these skills more important, not less. First, the shift toward specialisation — infusion technicians, composite engineers, systems installers, and finish specialists — means more handovers between specialists. Each handover is a communication and teamwork event that can either protect or compromise quality. Second, the growing use of subcontractors within a single build means working with people who are not part of the permanent team, who may use different procedures, and who may have different ideas about acceptable standards. Third, the increasing diversity of the Australian workforce — in age, background, and experience level — demands higher cultural awareness and communication flexibility. The builder who can work well with anyone, adapt their communication style, resolve friction early, and contribute constructively to any team is the most valuable person in the yard — regardless of their technical skill level.
